Not Done Yet.

Over 6 mio. people joined Hopenhagen hopenhagen.org ... unfortunately the UN Climate Change Conference did not pan out as well as we would have hoped for.

Therefore we're not done yet - just like 350.org states:

"The UN climate talks are over and we don't have the fair, ambitious, and binding treaty this global movement--and the latest science--demands. But this is not over--world leaders are NOT DONE YET. And neither are we."

350.org is an international campaign dedicated to building a movement to unite the world around solutions to the climate crisis--the solutions that science and justice demand.

The mission is to inspire the world to rise to the challenge of the climate crisis—to create a new sense of urgency and of possibility for our planet.

The focus is on the number 350--as in parts per million, the level scientists have identified as the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere. But 350 is more than a number--it's a symbol of where we need to head as a planet.

Developing new strategies is not a fanciful vision, it's a necessity. Not only in terms of environmentalism, but also in terms of humanity AND economy.

The actual Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) report states, that the costs of sustaining biodiversity & ecosystem services are lower than costs of allowing them to dwindle.

Practical examples of how to do it differently exist - here are two precursory models:

There is an Austrian urban commune called Guessing. They compare themselves to a famous Gallic community:

No wonder - they were called idiots by many experts when they aimed at being self-sufficient. Nowadays they are, producing more energy than the commune needs, plus providing more jobs for their residents.

One day I watched a documentary on TV concerning Samsø, a Danish island.

What I remember most is that a vigilant person was behind all this, talking to people, elating them ... keeping things going.

It's about the "TRIZ Contradiction" again ... we need down-to-earth visionaries. People who do have a vision, but are also able to put vision into action.

Samsø – Denmark's renewable energy island
In 1998, Samsø was awarded the title "Denmark's Renewable Energy Island" and since then, the population on the green island situated between Zealand and Jutland has become self-sufficient in renewable power and even exports surplus electricity from wind turbines. Furthermore, the islanders have succeeded in reducing their emission of CO2 considerably, at a time when the emission of greenhouse gases in general is on the rise in Denmark.

All this is not about human beings being bad. It's not about crucifying ourselves. We don't have to condemn technology, we've got to use it intelligently and vigilantly.

It's about making eco-effectiveness - a term formed by Michael Braungart & William McDonough describing the Cradle 2 Cradle approach - profitable for companies and convenient for consumers.

We've got the scientific and entrepreneurial knowledge. We've got the means.
It's a matter of volition.

Maledives keep up fighting climate change

The road for President Mohammed Nasheed of the Maldives has never been easy. He is the nation's first democratically elected President and faced huge hurdles, including prison, to win office.

Nasheed says you can't negotiate with physics. He has three words for climate change deniers and those are three-five-oh. 350 parts per million is the level of carbon that we need to prevent climate change. He says the Maldives will be the first country in the world to be carbon neutral. He says if the Maldives can do it, larger countries can follow.

Nasheed pushed his audience to protest and put pressure on their governments for change.

Nasheed spoke to the Klima change forum in Copenhagen during the UN Climate Change Conference. Distributed by Tubemogul.

carrotmob

Hey, that's a cool idea - watch this:

Use the power of consumers (which is money) to reward thoughtful business attitude, the carrot instead of the stick. Nice one - the flash animation on the US homepage explains it even better IMHO.

utopia.de | reset.to

I joined the UTOPIA community some days ago, it's a German platform. The main topic is sustainability. People are discussing news, products and ideas concerning environmentally conscious consumption and ecological lifestyle.

My nickname's 'Werftlerin' ... referring to my company title kreaWERFT. krea is a shortcut for 'Kreativität' which means creativity in German. 'Werft' is the German expression for shipyard.

I love this combination of words as a company name, kreaWERFT is also a registered trademark in Austria now.

As a matter of fact I'm helping to design ideas, not ships, but still ... ideas have to be seaworthy to sail near the wind of business, too :-)

Back to the post topic ... here's another interesting platform:
reset.to

RESET is a non-profit organization. Its key role is turning public attention toward sustainable development and efficiently using donations (money, time, materials) to realize this goal.

I especially love the idea of financing bars:

Both utopia.de and reset.to are interesting concerning content, pleasently designed and offer nice features. So if you speak German, have a look :-)

Loremo (Low Resistance Mobile)

Cool car, isn't it. That's the Loremo, a low resistance mobile.

Little weight – easy to move. Less weight – easier to move.

This simple physical principle, which we can experience with our own bodies on a daily basis, specially applies to sports cars. By ruthlessly exploiting this principle, thus reducing weight and air resistance, we succeeded in cutting the Loremo’s fuel consumption to just 2.0l/100km.

The car shall be available in 2009, the page is quite interesting - for further information please go to www.loremo.com

Gilmore Girls & Hybrid Cars by Toyota & Volvo

Just watched five sequels of Gilmore Girls Season 7 on DVD, feeling kind of GG-stoned :-)

Noticed a nice product placement ... Rory's driving a Toyota Prius, one of the first affordable hybrid cars.

The system is quite intelligent IMHO, please have a look: hybridsynergydrive.com

And for Volvo fans like me there are good news:

Volvo shows at the IAA Motorshow in Frankfurt the brand new C30 hybrid. This Volvo C30 hybrid can drive on bio fuel but it’s main source is electricity. You can plug it in the wall and fully loaded the car can drive 60 miles. Loading the electricty will take 3 hours. The Bio fuel will only be called upon when it is needed.

The fuelcosts of a C30 hybrid will be 80% less then having a “normal” car and the CO2 emission will be 60% less then the most efficiant cars available on the market right now.

The main difference between the Volvo Hybrid and hybrid cars like those of Honda, Toyota and Lexus is that Volvo C30 uses the electricty as it’s main source of power as the others use it as a short assistence for normal fuel.

And it's developed in the US ... seems like Al Gore had some impact after all ... just a wild guess!!!!

ecoauto.info

People cope differently with soaring oil prices: Some work overtime, others walk or bike to work. Stanislav Miler heads to McDonald's.

There, and at other restaurants, he collects used vegetable cooking oil to fuel his two-tank white Fiat Ducato van-cum-mobile home. The environmentally conscious filmmaker and multimedia producer is living his dream of traveling the world, as cheaply — and environmentally friendly — as possible.

These are the first lines of an article published by The Prague Post Online.

I happen to know Stanislav. He told me about his plans to travel around a little bit more with this Fiat, so if you want to follow his journey, please visit his blog ecoauto.blogspot.com and read about:

Travelling with EcoAuto - vegetable oil mobile home. Collecting used oil from restaurants, stories of local people and exploring life and cultures. Promoting alternative and renewable energy.

Action Against Climate Change

Did you participate? I think my daughter and I were quite alone doing this. We shut down. There were only e-mails and short reports on radio stations - people might not have known.

:-(

Action Against Climate Change

On February 1st you can participate in the worldwide greatest action against climate change!!!

Various environmental organizations are asking the peoples of this planet to hold 5 minutes of silence: Everyone should turn off all lights, electricity etc. between 7:55 until 8 p.m. to bring attention to other inhabitants, the media and politicians about the daily waste of energy.

An act which takes only 5 minutes, which cost nothing, but shows the governments that climate change should be on the top agenda of world politics. Why this date? On February 1st the United Nations is publicizing the newest results and knowledge base on climate change.

SO...TURN OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ALSO......DREHEN SIE AB!!!!!
